The Montclair Public Library’s head of facilities and security, Tim Flowers, has received the 2022 Margery Quigley Staff Award, which honors an exceptional staff member nominated by his or her peers.

Flowers received the surprise award at a library reception on May 31 that also recognized the eight other nominees, and the hard work and dedication of the staff as a whole.

“Tim is one of the hardest-working people I know,” said Mary Packer, executive director of the Montclair Public Library Foundation. “He has a smile and a helping hand for everyone, and I greatly admire his equanimity and problem-solving approach. I’m delighted his colleagues chose him for this award.”

Said Janet Torsney, the library’s interim director: “It was such an honor to recognize Tim’s extraordinary work at the library. I’m especially happy that our whole library family — staff, trustees, foundation and friends — was there to celebrate him.”

Some of the things his colleagues said about Flowers:

  • “We could not function without him.  He makes the library a better place every day.”
  • “I think of Tim as a people-whisperer. Depending on the people and situation, he can be gregarious and charming, down-to-earth and a straight-shooter, or a calming source of compassion.”
  • “Especially deserved now, as he has been operating a one-man department with enormous responsibility for both buildings. I know Margery would recognize Tim’s commitment, dedication, flexibility, talent and unfailing good humor.”

The award is named after Margery Quigley, a visionary director of the Montclair Public Library, and is supported by the Montclair Public Library Foundation.
