Tropical storm Henri’s effects: What to expect in Montclair Sunday

Henri -- the tropical storm expected to make landfall in New England Sunday morning -- won't hit New Jersey directly, but its effects are already being felt in the Montclair area.

As of Sunday afternoon, a National Weather Service tropical storm warning remained in effect for eastern Essex County. Flooding watches were in effect for the eastern and western parts of the county through Monday evening. A flash flood warning was in effect for the county until 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Overnight rains had already caused flooding in some parts of northern New Jersey. Late Saturday night, flooding on the truck portion of Routes 1 and 9 closed all lanes in Jersey City. Shortly before midnight, Frank R. Rodgers Boulevard was closed in Harrison for flooding, with multiple vehicles stranded, including a law enforcement vehicle, according to the NWS.

At 12:38 a.m. Sunday, the NWS reported flash flooding in Clifton had shut down all lanes of Route 3 westbound. All lanes eastbound were closed in the area of the ramp to southbound Route 21 as of 8:25 a.m., according to nj511.org.

And at 1:31 a.m., flooding on the Route 280 eastbound ramp to Exit 10 for Northfield Avenue had closed all lanes as well.

By 1:10 a.m, 2.15 inches of rain had already fallen in Montclair, according to reports to the NWS. But Montclair residents awoke to lighter rains Sunday morning.

At 10:30 a.m., Outer Port Street in the Port Newark Elizabeth Marine Terminal closed for flooding.

Montclair Township shut down Glenridge Avenue from North Willow Street and Bloomfield Avenue in anticipation of the storm. A crane erecting the new midtown parking deck needed to lower its boom to the ground, blocking the roadway.

Anyone in an emergency related to the storm should call 911 or the township's number for general assistance, 973-744-1400, Mayor Sean Spiller said on Facebook late Saturday.

Downed wires can be reported to PSE&G at 800-436-PSEG (7734), via the utility's mobile app or via the PSE&G website. Outages can be reported to the same number, by texting OUT to 4PSEG (47734) or on the utility's site as well. As of 9 a.m. Sunday, PSE&G's online power map showed no outages in Montclair.

In Montclair's last serious storm, several vehicles got trapped in flooded streets.
