A Walnut Street fire Wednesday sent one resident to the hospital and caused heavy fire, smoke and water damage to the building, damaging three apartments, fire officials said.

At 11 a.m., the Montclair Fire Department responded to a call regarding a fire on the first floor of the building, the department said in a statement cited by both Montclair Patch and Tapinto Montclair. Montclair Local has contacted the fire department seeking the same information.

Residents self-evacuated, and the department was able to quickly extinguish the fire, the department said. A unit from Bloomfield helped bring the fire under control. Units from Clifton, West Orange and Cedar Grove covered the township for the duration of the incident.
