At the time of Monica Paul’s fatal shooting at the Montclair YMCA on Glen Ridge Avenue on June 26, 2008, the victim’s daughter, Essence Duckett, was 11 years old. Her father, Kenneth Duckett, is now standing trial at the Essex County Courthouse, accused of the murder.

Yesterday, a video tape of Essence talking to a detective shortly after the shooting was played in court as the only testimony that the girl will give. She described the incident to a detective, explaining that while she didn’t remember seeing him, she recognized her father’s voice and recounted the conversation between him and Paul directly before she was shot.

The trial resumes on Tuesday, with more witness testimony. Read the whole story on NJ.com.
