This weekend in Baristaville there will be plenty to do for everyone. Whether you’re planning to catch some live music, or make a few unusual Valentine’s Day gifts or you’ll find the events listed here.


Saturday at 8 p.m at Montclair State University’s Alexander Kasser Theater’s Peak Performances, Renowned pianist Christopher O’Riley teams up with Montclair native Carter Brey, the principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic. The two will play Bach’s Sonata in G Minor for viola da gamba and keyboard; Edvard Grieg’s Sonata in A Minor, op. 36, for cello and piano; and the regional premiere of Justin Dello Joio’s Due per Due, composed exclusively for Mr. Brey.


Sunday at 3 p.m., Peak Performance will present the Zafir Project, a collaboration between Imani Winds and acclaimed Palestinian oud and violin artist Simon Shaheen, for a world-premiere collaboration that includes performances of works by Gamal Abdel-Rahim, Manuel de Falla, Miguel del Aguila and a selection of Klezmer dances arranged by Gene Kavadlo.

Will Barnet’s exhibit will open at the Montclair Art Museum today (Friday, Feb. 4) and will run until July 17. His recent work focuses on Native American-inspired integration of organic and geometric picture forms. Barnet’s work was previously featured at the Montclair Art Museum in 2007.

Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography exhibit will also open and run for the same duration. His installation will feature 13 photographs of flowers.

Tonight at Tierney’s Tavern (136-138 Valley Road in Montclair), check out the Sidney Green Street Band. They’re playing from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m., and there will be an $8 cover charge.

Saturday at the Shillelagh Club, Clancy’s Ghost takesthe stage. The band kicks things off at 9 p.m., and there is no cover. The Shillelagh Club is at 648 Prospect Ave. in West Orange.

Musician Amy Speace will be performing at Studio Art Saturday Feb. 5 starting at 8 p.m. Doors 0pen at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17.50 in advance and $20 at the door. To purchase tickets click here.

Join Bnai Keshet for an evening of Ladino songs and stories with Flory Jagoda, internationally known for preserving the music of the Sephardic Jews of Bosnia, Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. With folksinger Susan Gaeta, Jagoda will lead singing and tell stories of a culture lost but not forgotten. International folk dancer Jim Gold will teach dances he choreographed to two of Flory’s songs. Vegetarian tapas will be served buffet-style. Montclair’s Alma Schneider, of Take Back the Kitchen, LLC, is coordinating the buffet. Advance reservations are required. The evening is free for members of Bnai Keshet and $36 for non-members. If you’re feeling in the mood for some creative activity, check out these classes:

“Valentine’s Day Lip Balm and Lotion” is a class for adults and children age 14 and older that takes place Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Essex County Environmental Center. Maria, a soap maker, Essex County beekeeper and proprietor of HoneyLove Soaps, will show participants how to make their own pure, natural lip balm and lotion. Participants will each leave with one tin of lip balm and one jar of lotion. All supplies and containers are included. Cost is $45 per person. Advance registration is required. Also at the Environmental Center on Saturday is “Decorating with Earth Plaster,” a lost art that is a fun use of indoor time during the winter. It’s easy to apply and repair, all natural, inexpensive and absolutely organically beautiful. Participants will learn the basics from SmartLittleHouse staff. The cost is $21 per person.
