The George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University is a 7,200 square foot, state-of-the-art facility. It houses the permanent collection of works by well-known artist George Segal and other 20th and 21st century artists. A current exhibit, Barnet/Segal: It Runs in the Family, showcases the second generation talents of Peter Barnet and Rena Segal, the son and daughter, respectively, of famed contemporary artists Will Barnet and George Segal. Through 50 paintings equally divided between the two artists, this exhibition explores the unique niche each has found as the offspring of a famous artist while presenting a pairing of painters whose works are complimentary in color, media, and subject choice. Many of Segal’s paintings are boldly colored landscapes and still lifes, while Barnet’s tend to portray domestic scenes with a dog as the central figure. Both say their fathers encouraged them to pursue their passion in art and to develop their own individual styles.

Sadeqa Johnson, a Baristaville writer and co-founder of 12th Street Press Publishing Company will be at Words in Maplewood this Saturday reading and signing her first novel Love In a Carry-on Bag, which asks the question “Can a long distance relationship really survive?” “Drenched in the perils of passion and the sweet-sounds of jazz, Johnson dives deep into the world of ambition and the stumbling blocks of family.” The book has been called, “Clever, fast-paced and sexy.”

The Store at MAM welcomes another local talent this weekend. Andrea Panico will hold an Artist’s Trunk Sale, featuring her architecture-inspired jewelry and personal keepsakes from Pico Design. Pico Design was formed in 2005 and believes that little things can have a big impact in our homes, on our bodies and in our lives.
As a product designer, Andrea creates jewelry like “an architect of small things,” with a focus on design and construction details that are unique in jewelry design. In 2010, Pico was awarded the license to design and sell silver jewelry under the Frank Lloyd Wright name. The first pieces in the collection were inspired by the drawings for Wright’s home and studio in Oak Park, Illinois, the Robie House, and the Avery Coonley Playhouse. The collection has met with great success and has solidified Pico as a creative and unique presence in the fashion and art jewelry community. I’m a big fan of all of her collections, so you can be sure I’ll be making a stop at the trunk show this weekend.

Also on Saturday is a free introductory class called The Art of Nia at The Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Montclair. Taught by Maplewood resident Bernadette Pleasant, Nia is a wellness workout and fitness practice that combines dance (modern, jazz and Duncan dance) , martial arts ( Tai Chi, Aikido and Tae Kwon Do) and healing arts (Yoga, Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais) to give a well-balanced workout and rounded physical, mental and emotional experience. Al Johnson, fine artist, illustrator, and mentor whose reputation and acclaim is world wide, will be at 73 See Gallery in Montclair on Sunday to speak and dialogue about his process, inspiration and techniques. His current exhibit “Expansion: On Love Dreams Politics Music” will be on view at the gallery through April 12. Johnson’s exhibitions have included the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum in Japan, the Guangzhou International Art Fair in China and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His portrait of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm is currently being considered for a commemorative US postal stamp. An outstanding storyboard artist, his accomplishments include Academy Award winning film “The Hours”, feature film “After Life”, HBO’s “Soprano’s”, “Six Feet Under” and “Sex and The City” to name just a few.

Oakside Bloomfield Cultural Center’s monthly concert series, Music at the Mansion, will feature classical singer April Boyett, singer/songwriter Makenzie Caine and Award winning singer, songwriter and recording artist Jim VanSlyke this Sunday. Boyett has been featured around the country in both opera and musical theater. April was most recently seen performing at Carnegie Hall with the NY Pops in a Swingin’ Christmas. Makenzie Caine is a Bloomfield resident and just finished recording her debut album of original music set to drop late May 2012. She has performed in Japan as part of the opening cast of Universal Studios “Monsters Rock & Roll Show,” Off Broadway in “The Rise of Dorothy Hale,” in numerous episodes of ABC’s late “All My Children,” and as the star female lead in the upcoming feature film, “Solomon Grundy.” Jim Van Slyke is an Award winning singer, songwriter and recording artist who has headlined celebrated appearances on concert stages around the globe. Recently, Jim has performed the critically acclaimed showcase, The Sedaka Show. Jim’s critically acclaimed album (on the LML Music Label) was named to the Official 2006 Grammy Award Ballot for Best Pop Vocal Album alongside such artists as Billy Joel, Audra McDonald, Justin Timberlake and John Mayer.
