Crayons, eggs and a jar. Really people, could I make this any easier for you? What parent does not have broken crayons strewn all over the house? Most likely the one who tosses those things and does not save them for a craft, but that’s not me.

No. I save these things so my kids and I can do creative and fun projects, like this one. And then my daughter asked me, “Mommy are we going to dye eggs at Grandmary’s house too?” When I say yes she  says, “Good, because she has the real kind you get in the box.” The grass is always greener people and this is why I have the neighbor kids over to do projects. They think I am a craft goddess. Is a title too much too ask for?

Materials

Here is what you will need:

  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • A  clean empty jar
  • Broken crayons in bright colors chopped and or shaved
  • An egg dipper
  • A vegetable peeler

Step One: Boil water and pour it into the jar. Sprinkle some crayon shavings into the jar.

Step Two: Put the egg into the egg holder and dip into the jar trying to push the egg into the crayon wax. Take it out and set it to dry. We dyed about 3-4 eggs before pouring out the mix and starting again. I poured the waxy water through a coffee filter over a bowl as to not clog up my sink.

Dip the eggs in the hot water with crayon shavings

We found that some crayons worked better than others and some colors, such as red, worked better than yellow. It was a fun trial and error project and we liked that we could simply re-dye an egg if we did not like our results.

Happy Easter Baristaville and remember– too many irons in the fire is better than not having any. Now who knows what song that’s from?
