Celebrate the arts in our area this weekend with gallery walks, theater, jazz and more. Having this kind of culture where I live makes me forget about our high taxes.

The Montclair Art Walk: A Little Night Walk X, an evening in twenty-one venues from 6 pm-9 pm, takes place tonight. Start your tour of the area’s impressive art early at Montclair Art Museum beginning at 5 pm. There you’ll see  the new exhibits: Georgia O’Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture  Katsinam, and the Land and Saya Woolfalk: The Empathics. Then go gallery hopping at these participating venues.

On Friday go see 4th Wall Theatre’s Next to Normal at the Westminster Center for the Arts on the campus of Bloomfield College. The rock musical “pushed Broadway in new directions,” according to Rolling Stone, for its unusual subject: mental illness. It tells the story of a suburban mother, Diana Goodman, who struggles with bipolar disorder and the effect it has on her family. The contemporary musical combines provocative lyrics by Brian Yorkey and a pop rock score by Tom Kitt.

Luna Stage opens its 2012-2013 Music in the Moonlight Jazz Series, which are intimate Sunday concerts featuring local renowned jazz artists, with Dave Stryker playing tribute to Wes Montgomery. Montgomery played one of the most unique and exciting sounds in improvisational music. He continues to be the standard for modern jazz guitarists, so it’s only natural that West Orange-based jazz guitarist Stryker would pay tribute to him, as he was one of Dave’s early influences. Stryker is now considered a guitarist with his own voice as well. Renowned jazz critic Gary Giddins has called Dave Stryker “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.” Joining him will be organist Jared Gold and drummer McClenty Hunter.
