This week’s Bloomfield Police report is shorter than usual. Sgt. Anthony J. Servedio explains why: “Cold weather always seems to be the best crime fighting tool we have. I’m not sure what the actual stats are but in my 27-plus years here, the really frigid weather always seems to put the bad guys into hibernation.”

Let’s hope they stay there for awhile.

On January 28, 2013 at approximately 12:15 am, an emotionally disturbed person (EDP) called Bloomfield Police Dispatch from a Conger St. address and told them that he had barricaded himself in his apartment with a hatchet and would hurt anyone who tried to come near him.

Lt. Sean Schwindt and Sgt. Edward Proskey, along with Officers Sean Courter, Thomas Icolari and Orlando Trinidad met with a building security guard, then devised a plan and entered the building to further assess the situation. When the Officers neared the apartment of the barricaded EDP, they could hear him yelling from inside the apartment. Once at the apartment door the Officers identified themselves and the EDP became agitated, and started banging on the apartment door from the inside, verbally threatening the Officers. The Officers began speaking with the barricaded man, trying to gain a favorable report with him however he jabbed a long knife under the apartment door, striking the boot of one of the Officers standing outside the apartment. Luckily he was not injured.

Then while trying to use a master key provided by the building superintendent to open the apartment door, the EDP quickly and briefly opened the door just long enough and wide enough to swing a 12” kitchen knife in the direction of the Officers standing outside. Once again no injuries were sustained by Officers and they were also unable to keep the EDP from barricading himself back inside the apartment.

The Officers continued conversations with the EDP attempting to gain his trust but the conversation broke down and the EDP was displaying suicidal tendencies from inside the apartment. A decision was made to force open the apartment door because the key would not work, as the EDP had Crazy Glued the key holes shut.

Once the Officers forced their way into the apartment, the EDP was located inside still holding the knife that he had swung at the Officers previously. He also had several other knives and a box cutter in close proximity to himself. The Officers tried using verbal commands, without success, to have the EDP drop his weapon. Fearing that the EDP was going to harm himself the Officers pushed forward toward the EDP, using protective armored shields, until they were able to disarm and restrain him.

Members of the East Orange Crisis Mental Health Unit, who had been called to the scene by Police Supervisors, accompanied the Police and the Bloomfield EMS crew to Clara Maass Medical Center where the EDP was to be treated and evaluated.

The EDP was charged with:

1)    Possession of a weapon

2)    Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose

3)    Resisting arrest

4)    Terroristic threats

5)    3 counts of aggravated assault on Police Officers

The Honorable Judge Paparazzo was contacted and bail was set at $5000.00 with a condition of bail being psychological evaluation and a court date of February 7, 2013 is pending.
