Fun Summer Traditions

August is summer’s full expression of itself. This is the last delicious stretch of summer and a perfect time to make lasting memories of fun times together. Focusing on taking time each day to laugh and play has been proven to increase memory and focus, decrease anxiety and help in coping with stress. Did you know the body releases endorphins (neurotransmitters that send a message of satisfaction and happiness) every time you smile?  Creating fun summer traditions are a great way to assure you get in your healthy dose of joy each season.

When planning your summer fun time think simple. Remind everyone that this is a time to take a break from any digital devices (maybe even your phone).  This allows space for real family connection.

Here are three examples of simple fun summer traditions everyone can enjoy together:

Tradition One – Family Picnic

  • Visit your local farmers market or store and let everyone share in choosing the picnic menu.
  • At your picnic have everyone share what their favorite part of summer has been so far an done thing they would like to do before the summer is over.
  • If the weather does not cooperate with you bring your picnic indoors and set up on the living room floor!

Tradition Two – Camp Out or In

  • Set up a tent or two in the back yard or find a space in your house so everyone can sleep on the floor together.
  • Play games like the telephone game, charades or flashlight shadow theater.
  • Just before you turn out the flashlights have everyone say one thing they are grateful for (even if you’re grateful you can sleep in their own bed tomorrow!)

Tradition Three – Together Time Play

  • Run through sprinklers together, play a game of Simon Says, fly a kite, go to the beach and have every one make a joint sand creation. This is time for everyone to play like a kid.
  • Take turns letting each family member lead the play for a bit.
  • Have a refreshing treat after (lemonade, ice cream,  strawberries with fresh whipped cream).

Add one or all of these fun summer traditions to the season and see how many smiles come out if it! Remember to keep it simple.  Taking even five minutes each day to giggle, play, and connect is not only healthy but creates fun memories that last a lifetime.
