YMCA of Montclair–ACE: Academic Camp Experience

Who: Ages 7–11 years (2nd through 5th grade students for the 2016 school year)
What: Research shows that the key to stemming summer reading loss is finding novel ways to get books into the hands of children during the summer break. A.C.E., a summer education alignment program, helps keep kids on track with reading, writing and math skills and includes DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). Hands on science, art, music and physical activity are all part of the daily program. Lead by Elementary Education certified teachers, students bring lunch, a drink and snack and we provide the rest.
When: Session 1: Ancient Warriors (July 5-22), Session 2: Water World (July 25-August 12). Hours: 8:00 am–3:00 pm.
Cost: $600 per three-week session. After Camp Hours: 3:00–6:00 pm (additional fee of $50 per week/$150 per session).

YMCA of Montclair – GAP: Gaining Academics Program

Who: Ages 6-10 (1st-4th grade students for the 2016 school year; limited class sizes – register early)
What: GAP is for students wanting or needing to increase the specific skills of reading, writing and math.  The program goals are to reverse summer learning loss, achieve learning gains, and give students the chance to master some material that they did not learn during the previous school year. The program is only offered for a half day leaving plenty of time to enjoy the summer afternoons.  If you need your camper to be entertained in the afternoon, the Summer Sparks Camp offers enrichment workshops from 1:00-5:00.  Lead by Elementary Education certified teachers, students need only bring a morning snack-we will provide the rest.  If registering for a Summer Sparks afternoon workshop, students must bring a lunch in addition to their snacks.
When: Session 1: July 5 – July 22, Session 2: July 25 – August 12. Hours: 8:30 am – 12:30 pm.
Cost: $420 per three-week session. Optional Afternoon with Summer Sparks Enrichment Camp: 1:00-5:00 pm (additional fee of $140 per week).

International Ivy Summer Program
Where: Caldwell, Chatham and Short Hills locations
Who: Programs for kids ages 5 – 14.
What: Classes based on what kids would love to learn like video game creation, robotics, minecraft, performing arts, weird science. We design the classes to be hands-on where kids learn by doing. There are plenty of choices across many disciplines so kids explore what they are interested in. Our ultimate goal is to help our students find their passion. Once they find it, they are self-motivated to learn and explore further.

Montclair State University’s Academically Gifted & Talented Summer Programs

Who: Children in kindergarten – 11th grade.
What: Families can personalize their schedules by selecting from over 300 courses in science, mathematics, technology, sports, visual and performing arts and the humanities. Anticipated courses include robotics, SAT Prep, algebra, Chinese, fencing, anatomy, and physics.

The Art Garage Summer Camp

Who: Children ages 6– 12.
What: The Art Camp is in it’s 8th year and going strong!  New programs, great instructors and LOTS of fun.  This year you have three options: Day camp from 9 am – 2 pm, Afternoon Art Academy: 2 pm-5 pm or the All Day Program: 9 am-5 pm. We keep our class size small for a really great summer art camp experience! Options such as Comic Con, Outdoor Sculpture, Art Academy, Printmakig and much more.

Blueprint: The Art of Fashion and Design Camp

Who: Kids ages 6 – 12
What: Campers will learn the art of photography, fashion design, and style accessories with classes, hands -on projects, trips an more.

Brave Girls Art Camp
Where: 16 Enclosure Street, Nutley, NJ
Who: Girls ages 8 – 14
What: A five-day foray into art-making. Each day features a collection of creative activities and adventures and that will boost self-confidence and self-expression while building camaraderie and collaboration. Campers will spend time in the studio, but also head outside and use Mother Nature to inspire and inform  creations. On the final day, there will be an art show to share favorite pieces from the week. Don’t forget to bring your own lunch!

Express Yourself Studios Summer Art Camp
Where: 1877 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Artists ages 5 – 12.
What: Offers children the opportunity to experiment with a variety of media in a fun and supportive environment. Children will be encouraged to use their imagination freely. Participants will create 10-15 art projects per week. The projects are inspired by different Master Artists. Children will learn about the Artists through discussions, examples, and art-making. Projects include painting, drawing, mixed media collage, sculpture, printmaking and paper mache (relative to the artists). An exhibition and reception featuring students’ artwork will be held at the conclusion of each workshop week.

The Handywork Studio Camps
Where: Montclair State University, Little Falls / Montclair, NJ.
Who: Kids ages 5 – 12
What: The Handwork Studio is a kids’ needle arts and fashion camp. Its purpose is to pass down the tradition of teaching practical arts such as knitting, crocheting, hand and machine sewing, embroidery, quilting, fashion and crafts in a fun and relaxed environment. Several camp options available: half-day, full-day, afternoon program and machine sewing for older kids.

Kids Create!
Where: Red Oaks School- (Morristown, NJ) Douglass Campus- (New Brunswick, NJ)
Who: Ages 6-12
What: Fill your child’s summer days with music, dance, theater and visual arts! Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., children develop their imaginations and skills through drawing, painting, collage, movement, music, improvisational theater, creative dramatics, and playwriting. Classes are taught by professional musicians and artists from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts and Youth Stages. Each week’s offerings are unique, so children may participate in one or both weeks. Camp weeks end with showcases, giving students the opportunity to perform for their families. No prior experience needed. Before and aftercare are available for an additional charge.

The Messy Artist
Where: 346 Route 10, East Hanover, NJ
Who: Kids ages 18 months – 5th graders
What: A variety of different classes for all ages.  The summer programs is very similar to the fall, winter, and spring programs, but you can tailor our summer offerings to fit your vacation schedule!

Montclair Art Museum Digital Media Camp
Where: 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042
Who: Kids ages 8 – 12.
What: This camp exposes students to working collaboratively while using new technology as a tool for creative expression and communication in our increasingly connected and digital world. Camp is open to all levels and no prior knowledge of software is required; however, basic comfort using a computer is recommended. Students will be provided with a USB drive to take home their projects.

Montclair Art Museum Pottery Camp
Where: 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042
Who: Kids ages 6 – 12.
What: The Yard School of Art is excited to offer four two-week sessions of Pottery Camp in our Ceramics Studio. This camp is for children and teenagers who are interested specifically in working with clay to create pottery, sculpture, and more. Campers are grouped in age-specific classes (6 – 8, and 9 – 12) Campers will have the opportunity to use the Museum’s diverse collection of Native American pottery as inspiration. Much of the work created in Pottery Camp will be kiln fired; some will be functional, some will be decorative, and all of it will be treasured for years to come. Much of this artwork will be displayed at the receptions in Leir Hall at the end of each session.

Montclair Art Museum — SummerART
Where:

Who: Kids ages 5 to teens.
What: The theme-based SUMMERART Camp provides four two-week sessions during which children will work in mediums such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and printmaking. Visits to the Museum’s galleries are included to enrich the child’s knowledge of fine arts. In addition to making art every day, children are encouraged to interact, talk, and learn about the history of art, its role in society, and how it affects our daily lives. Children are grouped in age-specific classes (5 – 7, 8 and 9, and 10 – 12).  Media based classes are offered for teens including Sculpture, Digital Photography, and more. Classes are limited to 12 – 15 children and projects are never repeated.

Visual Arts Center of NJ Camps

Who: Kids ages 5 – 12.
What: Various Art Camps available offering exploration of a variety of mediums, including: such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and three-dimensional work under the guidance of highly qualified instructors. Teens have an option of a Portfolio Development Intensive camp.

What: HWIS Immersion Summer Camps are not only language immersion, but cultural immersion as well. Campers will have a blast as they engage in hands-on, multicultural activities aligned to the introduction and strengthening of the target language. Instruction is 100% in Mandarin or Spanish. Experienced, native speaking teachers use non-verbal cues to guide campers of all levels as they acquire language skills and become global historians.

Jazz House Summer Workshop
Where: Montclair State University, John J. Cali School of Music
Who: Ages 8-18, All levels
What: Students receive mentoring and top-notch instruction from Jazz House teaching artists and special guests to develop key skills and enhance knowledge in fundamentals of music and the art of performance, for both instrumental and vocal.  Highlights include masterclasses, small groups and big band ensembles, private lessons, history and culture, composition and film scoring.  Students perform at NY’s Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Lincoln Center, top NJ jazz clubs and Montclair Jazz Festival for 8,000+ jazz fans.  Artistic chair: Christian McBride; director: Ted Chubb.

School of Rock Montclair Summer Boot Camp

Who:  Beginner (6 and up), intermediate (8 and up), and advanced (10 and up) musicians
What: School of Rock Montclair’s exciting, fun, and righteously rockin’ week-long summer camp programs are perfect for young musicians of all skill levels.  Depending on the week, SOR’s Boot Camps are open to guitarists, bass players, drummers, keyboard players, singers, and horn players ages 6 to 18.  This summer’s programs include “Discover Rock n’ Roll:  I Love The 70s!”; “Lollapalooza:  Best of 2013”; “The Alt Folk Experience”; “Songwriting and Recording” (2 week session/advanced students only); “Tribute to The Foo Fighters”; “Tribute to The Beatles”; and “Discover Rock n’ Roll:  I Love The 90s!”

YMCA of Montclair – I’m a Big Kid Now

What: I’m A Big Kid Now is a summer program filled with free play, exploratory art, singing, snack and outside play time. Campers fill their days with fun activities while gaining preschool readiness experience for the future. Potty training isn’t necessary.

“Camp at the Co-op”: Watchung Cooperative Preschool Summer Camp

What: Kent Place Summer Camp at Kent Place is a coeducational, state-licensed, day camp program for boys and girls, ages 3 through 15 years old, providing fun, enrichment and opportunities for physical and social development in a safe, non-competitive atmosphere. Newark Academy Summer Session

Who: Children entering grades 1 – 12.
What: Offers courses for advanced credit, enrichment and skill development, as well as preview courses in core subjects. Jump Start program for kids in grades 1 – 3. The classes, taught by a talented faculty, are small, providing an excellent academic experience. All summer session classrooms are air-conditioned.

Apple Camp
Where: Local Apple stores (Willowbrook Mall, Short Hills Mall and Garden State Mall)
Who: Kids ages 8 -12.
What: Learn the ins and outs of iMovie and how to make a film in about the time it takes to watch one. From storyboarding to shooting footage to editing, kids will create their own film from start to finish. The workshop, held at the Apple Retail Store, spans three days and leads up to an Apple Camp Film Festival where campers debut their masterpieces.

Seaton Hackney Stables Summer Equestrian Camp

Who: Grades Pre-K through 7th / Mentorship Program available (8th+ grade)
What: Steve & Kate’s Camps conforms to kids, not the other way around. Instead of a rigid structure, they give campers choice. There are a gazillion ways for kids to design a day at camp. One camper might dive into bread-making and animation while another flies down a water slide and scores a goal in our inflatable soccer stadium. It’s up to them. You can buy any number of Day Passes, use them whenever you want, and get an automatic refund for unused Passes. If you need the whole summer, they’ve got a membership too. Lydia Johnson Dance Camp

What: Under the direction of choreographer Lydia Johnson, LJD company members and teaching artists will lead small groups through a varied day of creative dance including Dance Technique, Choreography, and Survey of Contemporary Dance, with guest artists teaching jazz and hip hop. The day includes a Choreography Workshop in which the campers create their own dances to show friends and families. An extended day is now offered in partnership with Geralyn’s Art Studio so campers can dance in the morning and create visual art work in the afternoons for a full day of the arts. Petite Equestrian Program

What: Participants will learn safety on and around the ponies, grooming techniques, basic riding skills, and other primary horsemanship skills. While this is not a Horseback Riding lesson per say, the program includes an exciting riding component whereas each child will get to ride about 20 minutes and learn how to properly mount, dismount, hold the reins and control the horse/pony at the walk and a few steps of trot. Sessions aim to help develop confidence and motor – coordination skills while providing a supportive, fun, non-threatening environment for the participants as well as social interaction between them. This is a participatory program for parents who so desire so one may be asked to occasionally lend a hand. Parents/guardians must stay on location during the program. Pony Grooming Riding Program

What: This unique program provides an exciting and inexpensive hands-on introduction to the wonderful world of equines in a fun-filled, non-threatening atmosphere. PonyShare uses camp-trained ponies and cobs, smaller and easier to handle than their larger equine counterparts. Small groups of 4-5 children are formed according to age and prior experience – if any. After reviewing safety rules, materials previously covered and learning new subject matter, participants are assigned their size-related pony or cob and each small group works under the tutelage of a qualified and motivated Counselor. Some of the horsemanship matters covered include: Safety on and around the horses, Basic Anatomy, Equine Senses & Body Language, Grooming, The Tack and Harness, Driving the Miniature Horse, English & Western styles, Barn Management and Careers in the Industry. Participants also get to shortly ride or drive their charges for about 20 minutes during each session. This program enhances team work, self-esteem and camaraderie while helping develop a genuine appreciation and respect for the animals. Course materials are provided.

YMCA of Montclair – Camp at the Lake

What: Camp at the Lake offers swim lessons, sports, crafts, nature, science, outdoor survival skills, hiking, archery, low ropes challenge, drama, music, boating and fishing. This American Camp Association accredited camp provides children with exciting adventures, cooperative learning and tons of fun! Campers express their creativity, unleash their boundless energy, learn new skills and develop meaningful relationships. FREE transportation provided from bus stops in Montclair, Upper Montclair, Verona, Cedar Grove, Bloomfield, West Orange and Clifton.
When: June 20– September 2 (Pay per day Early Bird session and 10 one- week sessions). Hours: 7:30 am–4:30 pm.

Camp Riverbend
Where: 116 Hillcrest Road, Warren Township, NJ
Who: Kids ages 3 – 14.
What: Camp Riverbend is located in Somerset County on a 30-acre site along the Passaic River in Warren Township. Shady woods, open fields, nature trails, a wetlands sanctuary, athletic facilities and the river bank provide a variety of environment to explore. Camp Riverbend provides a wide range of activities, including arts and crafts, sports, environmental learning and performing arts. Every camper gets individual attention from instructors and group counselors.

Deer Mountain Day Camp
Where: 63 Call Hollow Rd, Pomona, NY
Who: Ages 3 – 15
What: Deer Mountain Day Camp is one of the first established and most respected day camps in the Tri-State area, located just minutes from the George Washington and Tappan Zee bridges.  Founded in 1956, Deer Mountain sits on 25 beautiful mountainside acres surrounding our spring-fed lake.  At Deer Mountain, age-appropriate programs for children 3-15 years old have been crafted by certified teachers and educational professionals to give your child the most enriching summer experience possible.  With swimming, sports, arts, outdoor adventure, lake and special event activities, campers rave that they have “the best summer ever”.  Deer Mountain Day Camp has been family owned since its inception and is now in its second generation of leadership.

: Jeff Lake offers a wide variety of age appropriate programs for children in pre- school through 10th grade.

What: Located at the scenic campus of Drew University in Madison, NJ, Oasis Madison has all the facilities you could possibly want in a summer experience- sprawling ball fields, tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, air conditioned gyms and classrooms, and an arboretum complete with nature trails and ponds! Campers can enhance their creative energies in performing arts classes like dance and drama and tap into their athletic side with various sports activities and outdoor adventure classes. Willow Lake Day Camp

What: Willow Lake has developed age appropriate programs which ensures each child has a healthy, safe and fun experience. Willow Lake’s modern fleet of air-conditioned 16 and 25 seat school buses (they do not use big buses) is carefully routed to ensure the shortest ride to and from camp each day. What: Kids take the adventure on the road to various hiking and swimming spots in the NY/NJ Metropolitan area and beyond. They’ve gone as far as Old Rag Mountain, VA and as close as Mills Reservation in Cedar Grove.

What: New Discoveries Camp offers daily activities, including swim, sports, arts and crafts, drama and science. All weeks are theme-based and include special event Fridays, such as Wacky Wild West, Carnival Day and Olympic Hoopla. Monday camp opening includes skits and an introduction to the week ahead. Wacky Wednesdays include Crazy Hat Day, Mismatch Day and Crazy Hair Day. Before and after camp care are available.

What: A fun-filled day of activities, trips, daily swim and much more. General Camp activities also include: daily swim instruction and free swim, organized team building games, arts & crafts, nature/science activities, and mini-clinics for sports such as tennis, soccer, baseball, karate and basketball. All activities are age appropriate, except swim instruction which is progressive and based on the individual’s level of competency.
