Another weekend full of great local events to enjoy!

We told you about:

Here’s what else is happening:

The American premiere of Figure a Sea opens at Peak Performances this weekend. American icons Deborah Hay and Laurie Anderson collaborate on a new work performed by the intrepid and impressive Cullberg Ballet. In Figure a Sea, dancer and stage form a sea of endless possibilities, where nothing happens by chance. Hay, a founding member of the groundbreaking Judson Dance Theater, has created her first large-scale work in many years, set to a sound score by Laurie Anderson and performed by the 21 dancers of the Cullberg Ballet. Gliding across the stage, they dissolve, join together, and dissolve again, like waves lapping against the shore.

mel davisMel Davis will perform at Trumpets Jazz Club on Saturday night. Davis is a recording artist, vocalist, keyboard player and organist extraordinaire. He has understood the power of his hands to transport the sound of instruments from his imagination to a concert hall or nightclub full of eager twitching bodies for all of his life, dating back to childhood. This was when Melvin’s ears, residing in the multi-cultural city of Paterson, NJ, just 20 miles west of New York, dined on the sounds of musical greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Peggy Lee, John Coltrane, Jimmy McGriff, Alvin Valentine and so many more. He played his first piano recital at 9, and at 15 Davis was sneaking into local night clubs, hoping to charm the Hammond B3
