MOMIX is back at Chelsea’s The Joyce Theater through July 16th, 2017 to showcase Opus Cactus, a collection of spectacular desert-inspired performances that defy simple categorization. At once playful, haunting, sexy, and vibrant, MOMIX uses lighting, costumes, acrobatics, and a variety of clever props to create an otherworldly journey for the audience throughout the two acts. Whether you’re looking for a date night or want to introduce the entire family to modern dance, seeing this revival of Opus Cactus from MOMIX at The Joyce Theater will entertain and amaze.

The dance pieces alternate in length and style, sometimes telling a story, sometimes spotlighting a desert animal, and sometimes focusing on the environment of the arid American Southwest. The frenetic and fun Gila Dance is juxtaposed with the elegant and ethereal Desert Blooms. Opening post-intermission Part II, the rolling, acrobatic Dream Catcher is balanced by pieces like Sundance, which uses large fans, and Fire Walker, with fire-tipped feet.

The set is simple, but the illusions created with lighting, costuming, and agility more than fill the stage and the imagination. The most magical moments prompt gasps and spontaneous applause from the audience, and the immersive production will urge discussion of “How did they do that?” long after leaving the theater.
