Members of the Montclair Environmental Commission will lead a 1.7-mile walk along part of the Lenape Trail on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m., according to an announcement at the commission’s website, mtcenv.org.

The Lenape Trail is a 34-mile urban trail that extends from Military Park in Newark west to the Passaic River, passing through Nutley, Montclair, Cedar Grove, Verona, Roseland and West Orange. The trail was established in 1982 by the Sierra Club in conjunction with the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.

The walk will follow the yellow blazes to discover how the Lenape Trail connects four Montclair parks: Brookdale, Yantacaw, Tuers, and Bonsal Preserve.

According to the announcement, the tour leaders will discuss native and non-native trees and plants, the Lenape settlers in Brookdale Park and the Dutch origins of Upper Montclair (Speertown) and the original site of the Upper Montclair Golf Club, and will point out the farms along Alexander Avenue, with houses still standing, that fed New York City residents in the late 19th century.

The walk will end at an 1845 dairy farm, aka Applegate Farm. The starting point is in Brookdale Park, at the northern end of the parking lot by the soccer fields and bleachers.

RSVP to info@mtcenv.org or on Facebook.

Note: An earlier version of this brief gave a later start time for the walk; the time was updated by the organizers of the walk.
