Alfred Garland Harvey, formerly of Montclair, died peacefully on Monday, March 22, 2021. He was 91.
Mr. Harvey was born in 1929 to the late Alfred and Frances Harvey. He attended Rand Elementary School and Montclair High School.
He went to architecture school for six months and then was drafted into the Army, serving in the 82nd Airborne and fighting in the Korean War.
Once his tour was up Mr. Harvey went to work for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police, where he worked in the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
He attended John Jay College in New York while working for the Port Authority and retired as a sergeant. But he never really retired, going on to work for Bloomfield as a meter repair tech and then working at Francis Byrne Golf Course as a cashier. He subsequently managed Weequahic Golf Course until he retired, again.
On Dec. 29, 1951, Mr. Harvey married the love of his life, Narissa Mae Thomas. They had one son and one daughter, Gary and Leslie.
Mr. Harvey enjoyed bowling, golf and being around family and friends. He had a heart of gold and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Narissa Mae; his son, Gary (Aida); daughter, Leslie (Gary); 10 grandchildren, Jamal, Steven, Marva, Lloyd, Ismael, Aliyyah, Malik, Hadiyyah, Najiyyah and Ruqayya; six great-grandchildren, Phoenix, Alexander, Essence, Olivia, Ilyanna and Zubayr, and “one on the way,” along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Mr. Harvey was preceded in death by his two siblings, Eugene Harvey and Ruth James.
Funeral services were private.
Arrangements were by Martin’s Home for Service.
