On this first day of Kwanzaa, Umoja, which means unity, Baristanet wishes those celebrating a joyous holiday!

Make a wreath to celebrate. This one features cut outs of children’s traced hands in red, green, and black. The hands are glued so the fingers form a wreath. Then, the seven principles are glued to the wreath. Or you could write each principle on a different hand and discuss their meaning each night for a simpler version.

Reminder! Montclair Public Library will host a virtual event, Kwanzaa Live with Culture Queen on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 2:45. Kwanzaa expert Culture Queen teaches your royal children a fresh approach to celebrating the seven principles of Kwanzaa through interactive music, movement, storytelling and Black History themed games. This signature Culture Kingdom Kids program is appropriate for all ages and will leave participants feeling more inspired to incorporate Kwanzaa into their family traditions. Founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, Kwanzaa is the seven day African American festival that celebrates culture, family and community from December 26 to January 1. Registration required. Please register only once per family. Zoom link will be sent to registrants upon registration.
