A Montclair firefighter was injured after responding to a fire that had spread into the walls of an Elizabeth Road home Tuesday, Dec. 28.
The firefighter was treated and released by a local hospital, Deputy Fire Chief Robert Duncan said. The home’s resident had evacuated before the fire department arrived. No one but the firefighter was injured, Duncan said.

At around 3:56 p.m., the Montclair Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at the home, Duncan said. The fire was initially located in the basement, but after it made its way into the walls, it spread to the first and second floors.
“[Montclair Fire Department] units stretched multiple hose lines and quickly extinguished the fire,” Duncan wrote in an email to Montclair Local.
There was heavy fire, smoke and water damage to the basement and both floors, he said.
A unit from Clifton helped bring the fire under control while units from East Orange, West Orange and Bloomfield covered the township for the duration of the incident.
By 6:28 p.m., the last unit cleared the scene, Duncan said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
