The Montclair girls track and field team grabbed the Essex County indoor championship with a balanced attack on Jan. 28 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
The Mounties girls out ran Livingston for the county title with 67 points to the Lancers’ 49.
For the Montclair girls track team, it was a nice rebound after they lost 56-50 to Livingston in the Essex County Indoor Relay Championships on Jan. 20, also at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
“It was a great comeback win for the ladies after finishing second last week at county relays,” said Montclair track and field head coach Daryl Washington.
On the boys side Montclair came in ninth in the team standings, Livingston took home the boys team title.
Washington added that the Mounties boys were shorthanded because of injuries and resting some for the upcoming state tournament.
“I was happy for the boys team, the past few meets I have really seen growth in this group,” said the Montclair head coach about the boys who finished 10th in the county relays.
In taking home the county title, Montclair junior Darriel Whiting, senior Ashley Noel, junior Corinne Stewart and senior Avery McAdams helped bolster the Mounties at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
The Mounties girls 1,600 relay team, junior Mackenzie Finley, senior Maya Kim, senior Leannah Jordan and Stewart, took home first place with a time of 4:08.03.
Washington added that the Montclair girls had already clinched the team title before the 1,600 relay.
Individually, Stewart took first place in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:21.93.
“I was happy to score points for the team,” said Stewart who added she wants to reach 2:19 for the season and is looking forward to the state indoor tournament.
Montclair Kimberley girls finished fifth in the county team race with 34 points, two points behind fourth-place West Orange. The Montclair Kimberley girls had some success especially in the 3,200 meters and some of the field events. Cougars senior Maggie Horn won the 3,200 with a time of 11:14.40 while MKA junior Sydney Fradette came in third in the race (11:58.28). In addition, sophomore Mila Huang grabbed the pole vault title with a leap of 10-feet-7-inches.
The Mounties will take on some of the state’s best teams with the indoor sectional championship on Saturday, Feb. 3 at John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River. Montclair Kimberley will be competing in the Non-Public A and B state championships on Feb. 16, also in Toms River.
