Name

Harold Porcher

Where do you live?

Bloomfield, NJ

When did you move there?

August 2018. I moved to my home in Bloomfield after selling my home of 13 years in Montclair.

Where did you grow up?

Charleston, South Carolina

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?

I am a fine art specialist working at Swann Galleries (Auction House). Director Modern and Post-War Art. I am also a fine art painter and printmaker.

Coffee, tea, or …?

I was married to a Jamaican. Once you’ve had Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, there is no finer hot beverage.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day?

I rise early and run with Sunday scheduled as a long run, usually with friends. Locally, there are so many great things to do. The Saturday market at Walnut Street Station, visiting the Newark or Montclair Art Museum. Then dinner with friends at one of the many great restaurants in our area.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

Choosing a favorite local restaurant is like selecting a favorite puppy from a big litter. I love so many. Recently, I keep returning to Blue Steel Co. for their Detroit-style pizza. Whether I dine in or take the pizza to-go, it’s always a treat.

What’s on your nightstand?

I saw a great New Yorker cartoon recently where a woman is standing in a bedroom doorway speaking to a gentleman as they look at a bed covered in a huge pile of books. She says, “He was crushed under a pile of books he had planned to read.” I’ll just say that is my self-portrait.

What are you listening to?

While in a moment of mindfulness meditation, I am listening to everything and nothing at all.

What are your current indulgences?

Road race season is upon us, so I am consciously attempting to shift my indulgence from ice cream to training.

What talent would you most like to have?

The talent I would most like to have is that of better utilizing the talents that I already possess.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about your town?

Bloomfield has good public schools, a diverse population, wonderful housing stock, and it is less expensive than some of the surrounding towns.

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral?

And to think, he set the world record for the fastest marathon time for a 110-year-old just last week!
