Dr. Jason Martin – “Barcelona Blues”

March 23rd, 2:00-5:30pm (Glen Ridge NJ)

SAME, the Starseed Alliance for Multicultural Education, is pleased to announce that the second event in its Meet the Author series will take place on Saturday, March 23rd, from 2:00-5:30 at the Glen Ridge Congregational Church. The program will focus on the writer Jason Martin’s second novel, Barcelona Blues, approached this time from a different perspective, that spirituality and religion.

The program includes a reception, an interview with Jason about both of his novels, his writing and his life, an interfaith round-table discussion, a recital of songs related to the books, and a book signing. It is a joint program with the Church’s Adult Programs, entitled “From Voluptua to Barcelona Blues and Thereafter: An Interfaith Journey”.

Here is an outline of the program, which will run from 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.:

2:00-2:40

Reception with some very good wine and finger food. A good chance to mingle and catch up with old friends.

Note: Both reception and registration will be open at 1:30 p.m.

2:40-3:20

Meet the Author interview: Conducted with Jason by Dr. David Kiremidjian, Professor of Comparative Literature, Brooklyn College.

Note: Conversation will be focused on spiritual and mythical subjects in both novels, as well as adventure as a means to discover who we really are.

3:20-3:50

A round-table discussion, “An Interfaith Journey”, with Dr. Jason Martin (Ancient Shamanism), Dr. David Kiremidjian (Buddhism), the church minister (Christianity) and a Muslim imam (Islam).

Note: Topics will be concerning how we are all connected and related to each other and the way in which our present condition is interpreted and expressed in different religious practices and faiths.

Show & Tell: Art and cultural topics relevant to the first two segments

Note: Jason will be talking and also presenting other modalities of his shamanic practice, including an actual Shamanic Journey and some of the objects he uses in his healing work.

About the author:

Jason (John) Martin is the author of two novels, Voluptua and Barcelona Blues, and a memoir Ayahuasca Nights. He is an expert in medieval literature, a yoga teacher and a shaman. As a writer, he has published articles in The Atlantic and other literary journals and magazines. He is also a playwright and film critic. He has lived in Europe for years and has traveled extensively, including Asia, Africa and South America, delving deeply into Amazonian shamanism in Peru. Dr. Martin has worked as a university professor and a Seine riverboat pilot. He holds a B.A. in French from Yale University and a Ph.D. in French and Comparative Literature from the University of Rochester. Jason currently lives in New Jersey, where he maintains his yoga teaching and healing practice.

About the interviewer and event host:

David Kiremidjian graduated from Yale University, majoring in German. He earned his Ph.D. from Yale University in German and Comparative Literature. For most of his career, he was a professor of Comparative Literature at Brooklyn College. He has lived in Berlin and has traveled widely in France, Spain and Italy. Dr. Kiremidjian is the author of a book, A Study of Modern Parody: James Joyce’s Ulysses and Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus. All his life, he has been an avid and expert sailor, and is the founder of Full Sail, a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration of sailing boats of historical importance. He has an ongoing interest in Tibetan Buddhism, meditation, music and the fine arts.
