Every Wednesday Matinee

November 20, 2019 @ 2:00 pm4:00 pm

On Wednesdays at 2 pm, Montclair Public Library hosts The Every Wednesday Matinee, a film series presented in its auditorium. In November 2019 we will be watching Native American Heritage movies. The movies are as follows:

Smoke Signals (November 6) – Starring: Adam Beach, Evan Adams, Irene Fedard, Gary Farmer, Tantoo Cardinal. Arnold rescued Thomas  from a fire when he was a child. Thomas thinks of Arnold as a hero, while Arnold’s son Victor  resents his father’s alcoholism, violence and abandonment of his family. Uneasy rivals and friends, Thomas and Victor spend their days killing time on a Coeur d’Alene reservation in Idaho and arguing about their cultural identities. When Arnold dies, the duo set out on a cross-country journey to Phoenix to retrieve Arnold’s ashes. (1998, 89 minutes, Color).

Older than America (November 13) – Starring: Bradley Cooper, Adam Beach, Chris Mulkey, Wes Studi, Georgina Lightning. Rain  is a Native American woman living on the Fond-du-Lac reservation in Minnesota. One day, after she swerves to avoid some children in the road and winds up in a car accident, she finds out some of the children she’s been seeing running around the community are not living children, but the spirits of dead children. The unquiet dead are the little girls and boys who were murdered at the Indian boarding school that used to kidnap, institutionalize, and abuse children in the community. (2008, 101 minutes, Color).

Rhymes for Young Ghouls (November 20) – Starring: Devery Jacobs, Glen Gould, Mark Antony Krupa. Red Crow Mi’gMaq reservation, 1976: By government decree, every Indian child under the age of 16 must attend residential school. In the kingdom of the Crow, that means imprisonment at St. Dymphna’s, where students are under the mercy of “Popper,” the sadistic agent who runs the school. At 15, Aila is the weed princess of Red Crow. Hustling with her uncle Burner, she sells enough dope to pay Popper her “truancy tax”, keeping her out of St.Ds. But when Aila’s drug money is stolen and her father Joseph returns from prison, the precarious balance of Aila’s world is destroyed. Her only options are to run or fight… and Mi’gMaq don’t run. (2014, 86 minutes, Color).
