On Sunday, March 24, 2019, the Undoing Racism Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair will hold its sixth annual Women’s History Month Jazz Luncheon. This year the featured speaker is Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove, an international advisor on women, poverty and race and the co-founder of the nation-wide “400 Years of Inequality: A People’s Observance for a Just Future” Project.
The luncheon will be held in Fletcher Hall, located in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair, 67 Church Street, Montclair, New Jersey.
Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove is a social psychiatrist who received a MD in Medicine from Columbia University in 1978. She received a Board Certification in Psychiatry in 1984. Dr. Fullilove’s lifelong professional focus has been on the ways social and environmental factors affect the mental health of individuals and communities. In addition to co-founding and directing the New Jersey-based organization, 400 Years of Inequality: A People’s Observance for Just Future, Dr. Fullilove is a professor of Urban Policy and Health at the New School in New York City.
Dr. Fullilove’s presentation will weave the voices of women fighting for equality with Maritri’s jazz-infused soul and inspiring vocals. Maritri, the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist has performed with Grady Tate and Geri Allen.
“As we listen to the voices of women who struggled for equality, we can connect our own deep longings and frustrations with theirs.” Dr. Fullilove stated. She added: “We are not alone but rather part of a continuum of effort that reaches across time, the moral arc of the universe which we are helping to bend towards justice!”
Dr. Fullilove feels this talk is important at this particular time in America’s history because: “A 400th anniversary is a rare event. Let’s take this moment to reflect, to learn and to prepare to work for justice in the years to come.”
The Undoing Racism Committee is a long-standing committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair. The Committee’s goal is to work with the congregation and the wider community to develop, strengthen and act upon anti-racist, multicultural perspectives through worship services, educational programs, lectures, book and film discussions, cultural events and other community involvement.
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair was founded in 1897. It is a liberal religious community seeking transformation in hearts, homes, community and the world.
Jane Gaertner, the Chairperson of the Undoing Racism Committee, said about the annual luncheon: “The Undoing Racism Committee’s annual jazz lunch brings attention to an issue affecting women of color. At this year’s program, Dr. Mindy Fullilove will focus on the writings of Sojourner Truth to Maritza Castillo who speak their truths powerfully. Music by Maritri will help to inspire forward action to undo the systems causing oppression.”
