Heading out or staying in this weekend? If you’re seeking inspiration, here are some highlights from our calendar:
Tonight, catch the documentary Meeting Resistance at 5:30pm at Westminster, and then hit the Outpost in the ‘Burbs tribute to Woodie Guthrie (starring, among others, Guthrie’s granddaughter Sara) at 8:30. If you’re seeking laughs, check out Saturday night’s lineup: It’s Open Mic Comedy Night at the Y in Wayne, and Verona’s Studio Playhouse continues their run of Cactus Flower.
Sunday kicks off the West Orange Classics Film Fest, running through mid-March. Their first screening is Kubrick’s Spartacus at 2pm, with writer and film critic Allen Barra hosting a Q&A to follow.

24 replies on “Got Plans?”

  1. How come it’s never “Howard Fast’s ‘Spartacus'” to give credit to the original, novelistic source material? Or even “Kirk Douglas’s ‘Spartacus,'” since Hollywood lore still has it that the star took over direction of his vehicle when it quickly became apparent that Kubrick wasn’t up to it?

  2. Okay, and when your house is on fire, call the Upper Montclair fire Dept. Been robbed? Call the Upper Montclair Police Dept. School? I hear Upper Montclair is a fine district.
Remember Newark has 22 zip codes and NYC has over 164.
    All separate towns?
You also probably think that Millburn and Short Hills are two separate towns, too.

  3. The first thing I think of when I see “Spartacus” is Hank Azaria’s character in “The Birdcage”.

  4. Either prof bloviator is being purposefully provocative today, or he is just a pinhead, to not recognize the difference between the name of a “town” (or more properly, an incorporated municipality) and a neighborhood or locality within that town.
To follow prof blowhard’s logic, there must not be a Manhattan, Harlem, Greenwich Village, Prospect Park, Flatbush, Flushing, or Kew Gardens either (not to mention the dozens of other neighborhoods in NYC).
A place exists by whatever name people recognize it by; if I refer to “Baristaville”, you all know where I’m referring to. Just because there is no Baristaville Police Department (for example, although lasermike would undoubtedly eagerly fill that role if only to police our thoughts, make us turn off our lights, turn down our thermostats, and harass people who pay mortgages instead of renting) makes the place we all know and love as “Baristaville” no less real.
So yes, profwillimams, there IS a Santa Claus, er, Upper Montclair!

  5. Mr. Roll, I feel no great desire to call you names. But continue if it makes you feel good.
You are right, however, that a place “exists by whatever name people recognize it by.”
But that does not change the fact that while folks can call a place Upper Montclair, Harlem, or even Short Hills, it does not change the fact that they really live in Montclair, New York City and Millburn respectively.
The main point here is that Spot made the point by using the ZIP code. Can’t do that.
(Aside, so can I call my area of town Beverly Hills? How many people have to “recognize” a “place” for it to have a name? Really, your idea is proving to be unworkable.)

  6. Upper Montclair has its own zip code, as do sections of Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. You mean to tell me that if someone tells you he’s from Brooklyn, you don’t question which part? Brownsville and Bay Ridge, yes, both in Brooklyn but both very different neighborhoods.

  7. I’ll repeat what I posted last week, since I got it in after the fact:
    Piano’s Bar and Grill
I had never been to Hathaway’s, but it seems Piano’s will add to the “Re-development” of downtown Bloomfield.
The entertainment was very good (especially the powerful voice of Leanne Weiss), and there is a large selection to choose from on their menu.
I was there this past Friday and I highly recommend checking it out!
    CABARET NIGHT
Every Friday Night at Pianos Bar & Grill, professional singers perform cabaret songs throughout the evening starting at 8:30 PM.
    Location
    Pianos Bar & Grill
    36 Broad Street
    Bloomfield, NJ 07033

  8. I think that Upper Montclair should secede from Montclair. Install ROC as our supreme commander, and Mikey as our mascot.

  9. Ugh.
Whatever. Is it so hard to understand the point was directed at pinning a municipality to a zip code?
Sections, neighborhoods or places people “recognize” are not what I’m talking about.
(This issue of Upper vs. Montclair seems to be more of an issue to folks who may have paid too much for a house their realtor told them was in “Upper” Montclair. Or folks who want to distinguish themselves from Montclair for some reason.)
So go on Upper Montclair!! (Despite the fact I’m a “43,” I’m a Montclair resident.)
Or should I just say I’m from Baristaville? Is that on google maps?

  10. Iceman,
‘Eliability’ is the greatest name ever. I think he needs therapy more than practice on the field. I really hope he does well and gains more confidence.
I love how everyone is saying Romo will do badly because he went on vacation with his dumb girlfriend instead of practicing. Jessica Simpson is saying she has other things to do instead of attending the game – but I also heard there will be lookalikes planted in the crowd to throw him off!

  11. Prof is 100% correct. Upper Montclair, (Like Short Hills) is a section of a town that is designated by a different name, but is in fact, not recognized as a seperate town. There are 21 towns that make up Essex County. Upper Montclair & Short Hills are not counted in those 21.

  12. The ‘Upper’ refers to the geographic location compared to Montclair, not the economics.
Why does everyone get bent out of shape if you say Upper Montclair? Once I typed my address into a website and they told me it wasn’t valid because I had ‘Montclair’ and ‘07043’. I had to change it to ‘Upper Montclair’. No big deal.

  13. CLIMATE CHANGE CON AT MSU!
So you want to talk to a scientist on climate change, here is your oppurtunity.
    Climate Change in the Northeast

“The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) invites you to a workshop on the Northeast Climate Impact Assessment report,
“Confronting Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast: Science, Impacts, and Solutions.” Join UCS and scientists from
across the Northeast for an in-depth workshop on the local impacts of climate change and opportunities for emissions
    reductions in your state.
Climate change is already being felt here in the Northeast and worldwide. Urgent, comprehensive action is needed to
protect our children and grandchildren from the most dangerous consequences of a warming world. In order to move
positive action, the public and our policy makers must have the most up-to-date findings on the possible impacts of
climate change in their state, region and country, so they can make informed choices on the policy solutions available
    today.
This workshop will give you an in-depth look at the latest findings for the Northeast region, including appropriate
solutions that are available today, and provide you with a variety of tools to communicate effectively in your
community and classrooms, with the media, and with elected officials.
***About the report: “Confronting Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast” illustrates the effects our choices will have
on the Northeast’s health, natural resources, economy, and very character by looking at two different futures — one
where we remain heavily reliant on fossil fuels, producing high levels of global warming emissions, and one where we
begin to reduce our emissions as individuals, industries, and communities. The report also explores actions we can
take to reduce emissions. The report covers the Northeast region from Pennsylvania to Maine and looks at climate
change impacts on forests, fisheries, health, coasts, winter recreation, and agriculture.
Accompanying the 140-page report are nine brief state-specific summaries highlighting the key findings for each
state. The full report, individual state summaries, and interactive web features on impacts and solutions are
    available at: http://www.climatechoices.org/ne
***About the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment: NECIA’s aim is to develop and communicate a new assessment of
climate change and associated impacts on key climate-sensitive sectors in the northeastern United States. The goal of
the assessment is to combine state-of-the-art analyses with effective outreach to provide opinion leaders, policy
makers, and the public with the best available science upon which to base informed choices about climate change
    mitigation and adaptation.
For more about the NECIA and the technical papers behind the report, visit http://www.northeastclimateimpacts.org

  14. Likewise, there is no town called Llewelyn Park, nor a town called Newstead, which are wealthy sectrions of West Orange & South Orange !

  15. Like Spiderman got his name from a spider bite, along with his powers, I think mikey got zapped in the head with a laser beam and became a moron. Unfortunately, he makes rational debate about the environmental changes that are going on, and what, if anything can be done about it, more difficult by becoming a distraction and a diversion. All well, another day in the neighborhood, whatever your zip code.
