blood-1.jpgThe American Red Cross of Montclair, GR and Nutley are urgently in need of sickle cell blood donors. Those of any heritage who are able and willing may want to go along and contribute on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 9am to 3pm, to 63 Park St. in Montclair.
Melanie Hazim, public relations and blood services director of the local American Red Cross chapter, said the deferral rate with African American donors tends to be higher than other groups, meaning blood donations are postponed for reasons such as a low iron count or recent travel to some countries. With this in mind, the Red Cross is hoping to overbook the schedule for sickle cell blood donations to ensure sufficient contributions. This drive is co-hosted by the Red Cross and the NAACP.

There are restrictions on who can donate blood, relating to medication, travel or pregnancy. Please check here for details.
On Jan. 14, blood donations in general may be made also at 63 Park St, from 2.30 to 7.30pm. Healthy individuals aged 17 and above, weighing more than 110 pounds and meeting the donor requirements, are eligible.

  1. I am really confused here. What kind of blood donation? As it reads, it sounds like you have to have sickle cell anemia to donate blood to fill their needs but that just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Are they looking for a particular blood type?

  2. This explanation is offered by the Red Cross: “The best blood for patients suffering from Sickle Cell Disease usually comes from a blood donor from the Black community who can provide blood that is a better match for patients who suffer from the disease. Since patients with Sickle Cell Disease often need many blood transfusions, it is best for them to receive blood that very closely matches their own. Donors with the same ethnic background usually make the best match.”

  3. Thanks Molly.
    The initial post is confusing.
What Im also noticing of late is a reticence on the part of baristanet to clear up confusing posts.

  4. I hope I don’t get reprimanded for changing the subject here but I wanted to express my condolences over the loss of Teddy Pendergrass who died yesterday. One of the most played songs on my ipod is ‘The Love I lost’ by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Teddy on lead vocal. One of my fav songs to get pumped up to and just makes me feel good…man, he could sing.
    RIP, Teddy
