It’s Good Friday, the day on the Christian calendar commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus. Schools are closed, many municipal offices are closed, Glen Ridge and Montclair Public Libraries are closed and financial markets are closed, but it’s a workday fro the federal government, including the post office.
On the Baristanet calendar for tonight, Friday, April 2, an a capella choral meditation at The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark and “At the Cross,” a drama by the youth of Union Congregational Church in Upper Montclair.

Tell us what you’ll be doing this Good Friday.

  1. Good Friday concert at Christ Church Montclair (Church Street & Trinity Place). Starts at 8:00.

  2. I know it’s a semi-terrible wish (and something I can trace back to parochial school “with the nuns”), but I’ve always been interested in being in certain isolated parts of southern Colorado, New Mexico or Arizona on Good Friday, when the penitente orders apparently still do their processions (albeit in declining numbers) and even mock-crucify one specially selected member.
The nuns of my boyhood, of course, felt that this rarely photographed and still fairly secretive practice was the height of devotional practice. It is indeed a kinder, gentler Church these days.

  3. I took myself to Holy Face Monastery today for the Good Friday services…Takes one back in time…I found it very spiritual.
