Montclair Township says that construction will begin on Tuesday of a new traffic signal at intersection of Elm, Washington and Union Streets, which is the entrance to the new Bullock elementary school.

Construction is expected to take one week, which means that if everything goes perfectly, construction work will be finished in time for the first day of school, Monday, Sept. 13. From the township website:

Installation of underground wiring and foundations is expected to take one week, during which the road may be closed intermittently. Montclair Police will be on site to direct and control traffic for the safety of motorists and contractors. Installation of signal poles and indicators will take place within two to three weeks, depending on delivery of materials.

No parking will be allowed in the immediate vicinity of the intersection while construction is in progress. Please obey all signs and use caution when driving or walking in this area.

  1. Here’s an idea. The Montclair Police Department should have officers enforcing traffic and parking rules around schools for the first week back. Now is the time to establish an atmosphere of making sure drivers in both directions stopped for stopped school buses, obey stop signs and crossing guards. And let’s not forget (or spare) those parents who think it’s okay to park in No Parking zones around the school for just a few minutes while run their little ones inside.

  2. Parents and caregivers don’t need to be policed as school resumes. Have a little faith in the townsfolk, waltermitty. There’s enough big and small government butting into family life as it is these days. I think it’s probably safe to trust families to drop their kids off to school.

  3. Sorry, barisgem, waltermitty is right on this one.

Drive by any school and you will see “the entitled” violating EVERY law/rule/sense of decency imaginable all in the cause of THEIR best interest.

I only wish, as it relates to school drop offs/pick-ups and traffic, Montclair was able to “police” themselves. But driving around town, you have to know that is not true.

On another note, when are the going to begin remodeling the facade of this UGLY school? Though thinking about it, having a cop stationed outside of it- since it looks like a prison- makes total sense.

When are they guard towers going up?

  4. Good idea Scott
In the same vein as likes & dislikes of Summer. B’net should start town threads called “What _____ needs”
What Glen Ridge needs is….Charter schools.
What Montclair needs is…..Glen Ridge shoppers,
    Etc.

  5. HEY BARISTAS!
Can you look into whether Montclair is the only local town that has not received our NJASK scores yet? I saw the notice on the district site – some baloney about how the test company had to re-score the grade 3-5 tests (What the – ?) – which doesn’t explain why the middle school kids can’t get their scores? ESPECIALLY since the BOE actually has had access to those scores online, since like, the end of July??!!
    Thank you!
