How well do you know Baristaville, or even your own hyper, hyperlocal corner of it?

There are so many cool micro details in our everyday landscape — built and natural — but combined with the accelerated North Jersey pace, perhaps we don’t notice some of the best of them. In the second installment of this series, GPS Baristaville, we’re asking readers to prove themselves to be truly in-the-know hyperlocal citizens, and tell us where this sculpture is located.

Hint: It’s on a property deeded to the particular municipality by the heirs of a longtime resident. It’s recognized by agricultural and conservation experts as a sanctuary for many species of birds, trees and wild flowers, and is listed in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens.

Tell us where you think it is, and if you know the spot, let us know what it means to you.

  1. There is a neighboring town that has run this same contest weekly for over a year called ‘Where in …..’

It just would be nice if they were given a little credit for the idea.

  2. Looks like Freeman Gardens on Hawthorne in Glen Ridge. I grow up down the street from there.

  3. @herbeverschmel, I’m not aware of the neighboring town’s “Where in” series, but it’s hardly an original idea on my part. In the introductory post of GPS Baristaville, I credited the Public Radio International show, The World with the idea. I’m all for giving credit where credit is due. https://www.baristanetnew.wpengine.com/?s=gps+&x=0&y=0

  4. It’s Freeman Gardens in GR. The family I bought my house from had a rose with their name on it. When my daughter was young I would take her there I’m her tagalong and see if the grapes were ripe and look at the roses then we’d bike off to the Carteret playground…..PAZ in Times Sq.

  5. Yup, those of you who ID’d the “fish fountain” as being from the Freeman Gardens in GR are absolutely right. Congrats on being truly in-the-know hyperlocal citizens. If you’ve never been there, stop by and visit this local gem. It’s located at the south west corner of Maolis Avenue and Hawthorne Avenue. Admission is free, though donations are always appreciated.

  6. Raymond Helfrich created a a popular town-wide pictorial that runs (or did run) in the Montclair Times every week.

Is it still running? I don’t get the paper.
