Out of all the “national” days and month, this is my favorite. Ice cream is my weakness, hands down. But it’s the treat I allow myself often. But since July is National Ice Cream Month, I’m going to splurge a bit and enjoy it a bit more.

We gave you our guide to where to get the creamy, good stuff here. But this month, there are some other great ice cream events you may want to know about.

St. George’s Church in Maplewood is getting ready for its annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, follwing services. But in order yo have an ice cream social, you need ice ream–lots of ice cream. So they will hold an Ice Cream Making get-together on Saturday from 11 am – 3 pm. Bring your own ice cream maker or use on of theirs, but be prepared to make some interesting flavors, “We don’t make vanilla or chocolate, but we DO make Mexican Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Blueberry, Peach and Lavender ice creams, Cantaloupe Sherbet and Coconut Sorbet to name a few.”

For an even bigger ice cream event, you may want to take a day trip to Tom’s River for the 9th annual Ice Cream Tasting Festival on July 16. Baristaville’s own Applegate Farm has entered the competition in the past and was awarded a People’s Choice award for its Frozen Hot Chocolate in 2008.

In addition to all that ice cream you’ll enjoy live music, kid’s activities, face painting, rides and more!

My top three (what? I can’t choose just one) flavors are: coffee, Häagen-Dazs vanilla bean and chocolate. What’s your favorite flavor?

  1. Sorbet, sherbet, and gelato count, as long as they are not low fat or fat-free. I won’t stand for ice cream that isn’t full, creamy fattening goodness.

  2. So no nasty ice milk with the odd ice crystals that smell of old cheese? Nasty crap. Ok then I make a mean Ricotta Cheese Gelato…sounds gross but oh no… it is way too fatty to be gross. Cheese, cream, egg yolks too low fat?

Crap, now I want some and all we have is some weird purple yam bean ice slop. I’m firing Cook tonight.

Ummm Roo you forgot your fav flaves.

  3. What’s my character limit, Hols?

I would love to try the Ricotta Gelato. (Cheese is redundant, don’t you think? Can Ricotta be anything else?) I remember being in Italy ages ago (like freakin’ decades ago, that’s how old I am) and being with these Italians who ordered the local Ricotta as desert. (I think that was in Turin. I can still remember being impressed that my Italian hosts wore jackets that had real button holes on the cuffs.) Oh, the ricotta was so good. Yum.

I would have to say that my favorites have always been chocolate, vanilla and coffee. But I also like mint chocolate chip, and just about anything with chocolate in it, anything homemade, anything served at Holstens, etc etc. But nothing too sweet–pralines and such, yuck, that sh*t makes me yearn for a shot of insulin.
