Boy do I love fall. Okay, I know it’s not officially fall yet, but the weather is fall-like and just perfect. It will be a gorgeous weekend to spend outside, so this week’s The Weekend is all about outdoor events. There’s a lot going on in Baristaville.

It’s September in Montclair, which means the Upper Montclair Sidewalk Sale is here! Find great deals at all of your favorite downtown uptown stores, while enjoying great food, raffles, entertainment and family activities. Don’t forget your fall plantings at the Sidewalk Sale. Members of the Montclair High School community will be selling hardy chrysanthemum plants in all colors to benefit Project Graduation Class of 2012.

Stroll down Valley towards Inwood Avenue and shop at the Multi-Family Yard Sale organized by Inwood Avenue families. It’s the first sale in eight years and items are priced to go! The organizers tell us there will be tons of kids’ items, toys, clothing, as well as electronics, household items, an furniture–all in good condition. The kids of Inwood Avenue will have their own lemonade stand too!

Next, stroll over to Anderson Park and shop some more. The 28th Fine Arts and Crafts fair will fill the park’s paths with over 160 fine artists, photographers and artisans wares in glass, clay, clothing, leather, wood, jewelry and much more.

Over at the Montclair Art Museum, Marina Zurkow‘s Friends, Enemies, and Others exhibit will open with an outdoor community celebration. This is the inaugural exhibition in MAM’s New Directions series. Curated by Alexandra Schwartz, MAM’s first curator of contemporary art, the exhibition marks the world premiere of Zurkow’s series Friends and Enemies, and will comprise 16 works on paper and five digital animation videos, two of which will be shown on the Museum’s grounds. Marina Zurkow will attend, a nature-inspired soundtrack will be provided by Zach Layton and family activities will be provided. Food, drinks, including beer and wine provided by Egans & Sons and Cava Winery and Vineyard will be available for purchase.

Friends, Enemies, and Others Opening

Another opening happens in Monclair–the opening weekend of the 2011/12 Peak Performances season. First up is AnDa Union, a collection of musicians from Inner Mongolia, “featuring the amazing sounds of the “morin huur” (horse-headed fiddle) and the vocal power of “hoomai” (throat singing), this ten member ensemble will perform an extremely engaging program that will leave audiences breathless. “

Also in Montclair on Saturday, Go Lightly, which just started offering vegan food, will be having a Vegan Bake Sale to support Montclair vegans Outreach Fund, which raises money to bring special guest speakers to the community.

On Sunday, head over to Café Eclectic for the opening and artist reception of “Essence of India” by Indian-born artist Rinal Parikh. Rinal’s work is influence by different traditional Indian folk arts like kalamkari, Warli and Madhubani depicting studies of nature, animal and religious motif. Refreshments will be served.

Or spend the day singing the Blues at The 2011 South Orange International Blues Festival (SOIBF). The free all-day outdoor live blues festival takes place on Sunday, September 18 at Cherry Lane in South Mountain Reservation. After the success of last year’s festival, despite torrential rains, the festival location has been moved to South Mountain Reservation to handle expected crowds.

Founded by veteran bassist/producer Mike Griotof PWI Entertainment and co-organized by Allison Brown and Joel Levin (both South Orange residents), this world-class blues festival is further establishing South Orange as a preferred cultural destination, while exposing great blues music.     Make no mistake: there is nothing “downtown” in UPPER Montclair.

  2. I was sure you were right, prof, until I remembered that graffiti mural on the side of that hair salon in the parking lot behind Angelback’s, just off Lorraine Avenue, and also, the many rats that dwell along the creek next to the train tracks from Anderson Park northwards.

  3. I guess I’ll have to cross Watchung to head up to Upper Montclair this weekend. Hopefully the weather will be as beautiful as weather.com promises.

    But up here, we call it ART! As for the rats, they follow the tracks. Though I will get someone on it!

    Perhaps I’ll see you Kristin at the downtown stores in Upper Montclair. Not to be confused with the uptown stores in downtown Montclair, which of course is near where the old Mid-Town Diner used to be, around the corner from Montclair Center…..
