They were there this morning at around 8:30, sitting in a pile by the front door, but for the past few weeks, someone has been regularly snatching the newspaper deliveries from the Glen Ridge Library — without checking them out.

According to the The Glen Ridge Voice, the thievery has been going on for weeks. Last Friday, a sign was placed outside the Ridgewood Avenue entrance, publicly pleading with the culprit to stop the stealing.

Baristanet’s own Jenn Schiffer, who works at the Montclair Book Center, had this to say about the issue of stolen newspapers:

We used to sell newspapers at Montclair Book Center, but downsized to just the Montclair Times. The deliveries were too early for us to bring them inside before people started stealing them all.

Do you think that public pleading will stop the newspaper thief? Who do you think is that desperate for the news?

  1. perhaps a concerned citizen with a video camera could keep watch on the delivered papers for a few mornings?

It’s possible the culprit would be happy to pay the library to avoid the relatively substantial fines and possible jail time for theft of library property in NJ.

  2. My neighbor periodically steals my paper off my lawn. But he always puts it back. Maybe the library thief will do the same.

  3. I do that kind of thing all the time, Nellie. I steal someone else’s paper, read it, spill cereal on it, cough up a bit of phlegm, fold it neatly back up, and place it gently where I found it, and usually no one’s the wiser.
