Upscale yoga shop Lululemon opened its doors today, raising a collective “namaste” among yoga and exercise buffs who have anxiously awaited the store’s arrival since it was announced in November it would be opening a location in Montclair Center.

The new store, located at 520 Bloomfield Ave. at the corner of South Park St., drew a line around the block when it opened at 10:00 this morning.

“There was a lot of pent-up enthusiasm” from yoga aficionados, said Baristanet’s Annette Batson, who attended the opening. She added that the store was “beautiful,” “buzzing” and “very upbeat.” Music was pounding as a DJ spun tunes on the sidewalk outside and Guerrilla Fitness conducted free exercise classes.

Founded in 1998 in Vancouver, Lululemon prides itself on its quality clothing, which is made from a patented material called luon, a nylon/lycra blend with a four-way stretch and moisture wicking.

Carla Gable, a spokesperson for the company, said that Lululemon often relies on customer feedback when designing its clothes. If you think that tank top needs a pocket, let them know.

Montclair store ambassadors include Donna Scro of Yoga Montclair and Garden State Yoga, and Alexander Schulien of Brazen Athletics in Fairfield.

Today marks the first day of Lululemon’s 3-day grand opening, which will include free classes, samples and demos. For a complete listing of events, log on to the store’s Facebook page.

  1. Awesome, now I don’t have to go to Garden State Plaza Mall to buy a $68 t-shirt that’s made in China and doesn’t actually improve my work-out. We win!

  2. No info on the prices? I had read we are talking about 3 figures for a sweatshirt, which the Mayor was excited to buy his young daughter. Shop locally, everyone!

  3. All I see is an open store front. One that will probably do very well. This town needs that. Mom n pop..national retail..whatever we can get.
