upper montclair train station

Montclair’s First Ward Councilor William Hurlock just reached out to Baristanet with news that NJ transit withdrew its petition to delist the Upper Montclair Train Station from both the NJ and National Registry of Historic Places. The hearing was originally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, but this morning Councilor Hurlock and the Township Council received confirmation that state and NJ transit withdrew its petition.

“I’m absolutely delighted with this information,” Hurlock told Baristanet. He wanted to thank Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin, Freeholder Brendan Gill, his Council colleagues, the several groups in and around the First Ward, and the residents who worked to oppose the delisting.

“I’m happy the way the community came together.”

Senator Nia H. Gill sent Baristanet the following statement on her thoughts of the de-listing:

“I was pleased to be informed that New Jersey Transit has withdrawn its request to de-list the Upper Montclair Railroad Station from the New Jersey and National Historic Registries. We worked diligently to ensure that this landmark was protected. For generations this railroad station has served the people of Montclair and it is only right to preserve its cultural and historical significance. De-listing this important site would have been a disservice to Montclair.”

“I want to thank the Friends of Anderson Park, the Montclair Historical Society and all the residents of Montclair for their efforts in saving this important landmark. Today, is just another example of how Montclair can come together to protect what is important to our community.”

  1. Alright, good job everyone! The station is an important part of the town and the effort to save it is a nice reminder of our ability to work together for the betterment of Montclair.

  2. Very happy to hear this.

I still get sad when I think about the great building that was lost. It had a charm and a coziness that can’t be replicated.

  3. crazycat,

I recall that the clock was not original to the building and it also fell outside the period of historic significance. Therefore, it was extraneous in a historical sense.
