Last night, Montclair’s Stephen Colbert made his debut as host of the Late Show opening the night by singing the Star Spangled Banner with various Americans and ending at a baseball game – where Jon Stewart turns out to be the umpire and started the show with an enthusiastic “PLAY BALL!”

During his monologue he danced, joked that he hoped to find the “real” Stephen Colbert (insert Ashley Madison joke), and paid tribute to his predecessor Letterman, calling himself “a fan.”

Next, came some product placement. After telling a story of a cursed amulet and a vow to an evil entity in exchange for getting the show, he plugged Sabra hummus. Then he binged on Oreos as he made jokes about Donald Trump, who recently vowed never to eat Oreos again after makers Nabisco Inc said it was opening a new plant in Mexico.

Then came the interviews.

George Clooney was show’s first guest who appeared not to plug any work, but said, “I am just here to see you and I think that’s why everybody else is here.”

Colbert joked about him being the “arm candy” of wife Amal Clooney, the actor admitting that said he’s mostly “shiny” and “pretty.”

Next up was former Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush. Colbert teased about the GOP candidate, “This is the rare TV appearance where he doesn’t have to share the stage with 16 other people.”

The show ended with Colbert joining the house band, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, to sing Sly and the Family Stone’s “Everyday People” alongside Mavis Staples (Colbert interviewed Staples at the Montclair Film Festival) and other guest stars.

Did you watch Montclair’s own Stephen Colbert’s debut as host of the “Late Show?” (In case you missed it, CBS is letting viewers stream it with a one-week free trial of CBS All Access) What do you think?

  1. I tend not to laugh out loud when zonked out on the couch around midnight. Last night was an exception. He was quite good.

  2. I thought he was wonderful! Love the band also. I don’t stay up as late as I used to but I will most definitely record the shows.

  3. Sitting behind a desk, talking with a Republican…. not an edifying way to spend a few minutes before bedtime. But a local making good is always nice to see.
