MONTCLAIR, NJ – Social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is serious and it is seriously affecting local businesses, especially restaurants and coffee shops, where the combination of gathering and food preparation offer a double challenge. Restaurants and bars in NYC have been limited to takeout only.

In Montclair, Ruthie’s BBQ & Pizza announced the decision to close on Instagram Sunday, writing “It is with heavy heart that we have decided to close our restaurant until this crisis is fully understood. We know that everyone in our community is further alarmed as we learn about the pace of the spread. We believe science, we believe what epidemiologists are recommending, and that means we are all responsible to act accordingly. That means complete social distancing, and sadly means we can not manage to operate as a business and be secure in safety.”

Montclair Social Club announced it would temporarily close on Saturday, March 14, for the safety of its workers and the public. Little Daisy Bake Shop also opted to temporarily close but will be posting two things every day on their Instagram: 1) A cake from our archive (Something fun to look at.) 2) A delicious recipe from our team’s favorite cookbooks (Something fun to do.)

Big chain retailers – Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie in Montclair – have also shut their doors due to COVID-19.

Other local businesses have drastically scaled back, modifying their business, by eliminating dining and only offering takeout and curbside pick-up. Meny Vaknin, who owns Marcel, Mish Mish and Luisa, offered new temporary hours.

Java Love also made the switch to takeout only at its two locations in Montclair, closing indoor seating, but expanding outdoor seating.

Anthony’s Cheesecake in Bloomfield also made the switch to curbside pickup only.

Montclair’s new upscale eatery Faubourg has launched an at-home, to-go menu with special pricing. Faubourg will offer takeout Monday through Sunday from 4-8 p.m.

Other businesses are finding creative ways to reach their customers. The Max of Montclair is posting live workouts for its members to do at home.

The Eclectic Chic Boutique, located on Bloomfield Ave in Montclair, is offering customers virtual craft classes and craft kits that can be shipped or delivered. They are also able to ship or deliver any of their handmade goods.

Watchung Booksellers is also providing curbside pick-up — customers can order online, email or call and pick up books or get them delivered.
