Update: Torsney wrote to Montclair Local Thursday afternoon to say she will be leaving at the end of July.

Montclair Public Library is looking for its next leader to replace director Janet Torsney who is leaving at the end of July.

“It’s been such an honor to get our wonderful library back in shape,” said Torsney. “Now we’re working on finding someone really great to lead us through the next chapter.”

Janet Torsney

Following a nationwide search, Torsney was named director of the Montclair Public Library in August 2022. She served as interim director for five months after former director, Peter Coyl, stepped down in December 2021 to lead the Sacramento Public Library system in California.

During her tenure, Torsney has brought innovative programs to the library and found new ways to engage with the community. She is also part of the library’s story.

From 2017 to 2018, Torsney was assistant director at the library. In 2007, while working on her master’s degree in library science at Rutgers University, Torsney interned at Montclair. And, as a Montclair native, Torsney spent a lot of her childhood in the library.

Torsney has held leadership positions in New Jersey libraries, serving as interim director of Caldwell Public Library and director of Bradley Beach Public Library, Keyport Free Public Library and Brielle Public Library.

Montclair Local reached out to JoAnn McCullough, president of the library’s board of trustees, and will update with any comment.
