Vintage purse at Style Haven

Have you ever been to a resale store and found out a great piece, only to try it on and discover it’s got way too much Polly and far too much Esther? Fortunately, thanks to a combination of savvy retailers, Montclair now has 14 (yes, you read correctly – 14) resale, consignment and vintage clothing stores, offering a great selection of better quality designer finds and one-of-a-kind items — all at thrifty prices. Even smart, fashion-savvy teens are turning their backs on expensive tee-shirts with a brand’s logo and instead opting for a individual vintage-inspired look. Here’s a guide to shopping vintage, thrift, resale and more in Montclair.

What did Bridgett Artise of Born Again Vintage do with the 1940s bathing suit given to her by swapXXchange owner Bethe Danon? She turned it in to an amazing dress (see below). Find something at One Savvy Design that is not quite your size? Take it down to Style Haven and have it tailored. Wondering what to do with your Great Aunt Suzy’s old bridesmaid dress collection? Swap-it, consign it, have it remade into something else.

  1. I am a personal fan of Style Haven boutique. I love the fact that she provides alterations something that is going extinct. Holly, this was a great article and it is amazing how many stores in Montclair are vintage. Vintage styles are making a come back. I love how you broke each store down coding them for what consumer they serve. Makes it an easy guide.

  2. Holly, Great article, but how could you forget to mention Montclair’s oldest thrift shop—the Second Time Around Shop in Montclair’s St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Union and South Fullerton, open Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday (check times in web site)?!

Second Time around shop has clothing for the whole family, jewelry, household items, novels, cookbooks, children’s books, baby equipment, toys, collectibles, vintage, and other small items. The shop offers half price sales once a month, and twice yearly vintage sales and $5/bag sales, which attract new customers.

All items are very reasonably priced, and all proceeds are granted back to worthy charities helping other people. Plus they are staffed by a friendly “all volunteer” group, are always looking for new volunteers to help out.

Thrift shop lovers, Please check out the Second Time Around Shop soon: https://slechurch.org/?page_id=324
